West Shore Golf and Country Club - A first-class golf venue

Go to Golf Course Photo Gallery Our private 18-hole golf course, along the west shore of the picturesque island of Grosse Ile, offers peaceful seclusion in a spectacular setting. The course is challenging for the skilled enthusiast, as well as enjoyable for the occasional golfer. Members enjoy plenty of open tee times with four-hour rounds that are the norm not the exception.

Challenging and playable:

Our tree-lined, par-71 course has smaller greens that put through with subtle breaks and water plays on eight of the holes. The course offers four par-3s, eleven par-4s and three par-5s.

Golfers can match their skill level to one of four sets of tee boxes:

Black - Championship
Blue - Men
White - Seniors or Ladies
Red - Juniors or Ladies

Members and their guests have full access to:

- All clubhouse amenities, including the welcoming atmosphere of the club's dining rooms, outdoor patios, and bars.
- Men's and women's locker rooms are available.
-
A pro shop with a wide selection of golf apparel, golf clubs and equipment at competitive prices.
- Group and private lessons for beginners to those who just need to fine-tune one aspect of their game.

History

The original golf course was designed by George B. Ferry, a golf architect, in 1908 and was named Island Country Club. It was the first private golf club established on Grosse Ile on what was originally known as the Fox Farms property. A flagpole, donated by Mr. Charles E. Haisley on July 4, 1928 for W.M. Lacy, still remains as a reminder of the original golf club.

During the ensuing years the property was purchased by William R. Stadler, renamed West Shore Golf & Country Club, and leased to members. During World War II the course was closed, but was used as a training camp for the Detroit Lions football team. The original clubhouse was a private three-story residence, which was torn down after acquisition of the club and property on December 19, 1972 by the present West Shore Golf & Country Club members

West Shore Golf & Country Club joined with other private clubs of Michigan by entering the Golf Association of Michigan in 1972.

In compliance with the USGA Handicap System, the Golf Association of Michigan measured the yardage of the golf course on June 24, 1983, resulting in the establishment of a 6,560-yard par 70 from the men's championship tees, and a 6,025-yard par 75 for women.

A major expansion and refurbishing of the clubhouse and renovation of the golf course was completed in 1987. This included the addition of the second floor grillroom and modification of the ladies' locker room. A mixed grill and kitchen facility were added on the first floor level.

West Shore hosted the USGA 1986 U.S. Amateur Public links Sectional Qualifying Rounds, and in July 1987, hosted the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship regional.

West Shore Golf & Country Club in conjunction with Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club, co-hosted the 1989 Michigan PGA Professional Championship.

Golf Tips

To find out why you are missing putts, go to your practice green and try putting four-foot putts. If you make a lot of these putts but miss them on the course, you may have problems with being tense or lacking confidence. If you miss those four-footers more than you make in practice, you need to take a lesson from your pro on putting mechanics.
