If you are entitled to a free drop for some reason and your ball is just off of the fairway, fringe, or green, you may drop the ball onto the fairway, fringe, or green if it is indeed within one club length, the nearest point of relief, and no nearer to the hole. Sometimes players feel they cannot get out of the rough free, but this is one case where it can happen.
